Scout's a Face-Puncher
After starting off slow, the book is finally picking up. The events from the past couple nights have even made the small print easy reading.
The main event for me in chapters 8 and 9 was the fight between Scout and her cousin Francis. Francis insulted Scout's father, Atticus. He insulted the way Atticus raises Jem and Scout, and how he is defending a black man in court. Trying to defend her father, Scout punched Francis in the face. This was not a surprising reaction from Scout, because this is the way she likes to solve most problems. This angers Atticus because he knows his familly is going to have to put up with a lot of the talk about him defending the black man in Maycomb. Scout is going to be punching lots of people in the face is she continues solving her problems this way.
I didn't like the way Uncle Jack handled the situation. He whipped Scout the second he heard what she did to Francis without any questions asked. I think he should have waited and got her side of the story. Uncle Jack did redeem himself because he didn't tell Atticus why Scout really hit Francis because she didn't want him to know. I think that staying out of trouble is going to be very hard for Scout because her first instinct is to lay somebody out when they talk about her father, but she hates disappointing Atticus and I don't think she will do that very much. We'll find out in the next chapters...

I didn't like the way that Uncle Jack dealt with Scout either, and in the book I think he genuinely feels bad about what he did. I even feel sorry for him because from what I read, he didn't even know how to raise kids and just did what came naturally to him. (Maybe he was whipped as a child?) Great post!

Great predictions - and good insight from the Duchess, too!
