Tom Decided To Take His Own Chances...

I believe Atticus was right about Tom's reasons for running..although Atticus told him he had a "good chance" at the appeal, he was tired of taking the white man's chance over his own. Unfortunately, Tom's chances didn't work out well at all. I feel so sorry for his wife and family! Tom probably felt like he was going to get "the chair" anyway, so he might as well take a chance on running. I wish Tom would have waited to see what the appeal would have done, but I don't know if it would have made a difference. It was pretty much like take a chance on getting free and possibly dying now, or waiting to die. I don't know what I would do in this situation, Tom must have felt so helpess! The really sad thing is Bob and Mayella Ewell probably have a clear conscious, even though they caused the death of an innocent man! Well, that's all I have to say tonight...ttyl
