Jane's Determined

I am reading Miss Jane Pittman by Ernest J. Gaines. This is a story about a black woman who was over a hundred years old when telling her story. Her original name given to her by her master was "Ticey," but she was given the name Jane Brown by a Yankee soldier she gave water. She was about 10 years old when she was freed by the Proclamation. She began to Ohio where the Yankee who gave her her name was. About 25 people from her plantation left, some of the older ones stayed. When the ex-slaves were sleeping, they woke up to the sound of Patrollers. Patrollers were people who killed black people for no reason, and eventually formed the KKK. It is amazing to me that this is a true story because no one should have to go through all that. She watched a slow man get beaten to death for no reason at all. Jane seems to be a very outspoken and brave girl. She is determined to get to Ohio, and I'm interested to see if she will.

I know what you mean! When I'm reading I'll forget that it is a true story! It reads like fiction! Which is a good thing. ;)
