Running for Freedom
In The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, she is running for her freedom. Jane is telling her story when she is over 100 years old, but in the story she is only twelve. First, I want to start on how everyone decided to change their names once they were free. I noticed how alot of them chose to have Lincoln was either their first or last name. I thought that was pretty cool. I think everyone liked president Lincoln. Well, unless you lived in the south.
Jane, origanlly given the name Ticey, got her name from a Yankee Soldier, Mr. Brown. His troop all came to her plantation she worked on, and Mr. Brown started to talk to Jane. He gave her the name Jane Brown, and told her that if her masters didn't like it then tell them to come find him, instead of beating her for it. Well, when Jane told her master that her name wasn't Ticey anymore, she got whipped, bad! But get this, she didn't even cry! Yeah, Jane is a really strong woman. It is so horrible how they treated black people back then. I mean, it really was just like they were property. I can't even imagine.
Once the slaves became free Jane decided that she wanted to go to Ohio to find Mr. Brown. So, she sets out from Louisana on foot to make it to Ohio. At first she is with adults from her plantation, but the Secesh (a group of white men who set out to attack african-americans) killed everyone except for Jane and this other little boy Ned. So, Ned is searching for Ohio with Jane.
I think that if I was a slave, and I just became free, I think I would have stayed on my plantation. I mean, atleast there you would have a home, a job, and food. So, I don't see why you would want to leave if you weren't trying to find family somewhere. What would you guys do?
This book is really good! The reading goes by really fast and easy, and that is always a good thing. I would like to hear your opinions about this book too, so comment me! See everyone tomorrow!

I thought that Jane was extremely brave too! I don't think i could just get up and leave for a place that i had never been to, with no idea how to get there or how long it would take me!
