Read Out Loud

This is a picture of Star, who is eighty-two years old. Marion Wolcott took this picture in 1910. She is reading her lesson out-loud to her adult school class. Her teacher says that Star is the best reader in the whole class. I was really surprised when I found this picture, because back then harldly any african-americans could read. Besides even reading, african-americans weren't even allowed to get an education, espically women. So, I thought that this picture was really cool. I find it interesting how the class is all african-american women, besides that one little girl in the piture. I bet that girl is a daughter to one of the women in the room.
Ovbiously, this picture is in a schoolhouse. I bet that it is only one room, and that room is probably not very big. These women probably live in the country somewhere, because of the clothing they have and the condition of the school room. When I first saw this picture, I noticed how all the women were wearing dresses. You wouldn't catch me in a dress at school, you would be luck for me to wear a dress even at church! So, I was surprised how nice these women looked. Surprisingly, these women look very tired. Why do you think that? I bet it is hot, for one thing, and two I am sure that they have a number of things to do at home, that they are thinking about.
In this picture I would want to be Star, the woman reading. I would want to be her, because she has to be really proud of herself. I mean, she accomplised so much in her life, and for her, being an african-american, it must be very rewarding to read. I bet Star is very intelligente, and if she had children or grand-kids, she probably had many stories to tell her children. I love listening to my grandparent's stories, it makes me really appreciate them, and it gives me a sense of what they were like when they were younger.
I remember that in Mockingbird, Calpurnia could read. That is pretty much the main reason why I chose this picture. Calpurnia, and these women, all could read, and they were african-americans. If I could ask the photographer a question I would ask what the exact date this picture was taken, and what was Star reading. I think that it would be neat to read whatever was in her hands. Hope that you like my picture, and comment me!
