Reading Ivanhoe for Punishment

Some of you may have noticed that when Jem read to Mrs. Dubose, it was the novel Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. If you click on the title, it will take you to an etext of the book, and you can read an excerpt. Give it a try to appreciate this passage of the story. Scout narrates that when Jem gets tired reading and comes to a word he doesn't know, Mrs. Dubose catches it and corrects him. Can you imagine knowing a book like that to be able to correct Jem, even in her state of physical withdrawal from her addiction.

I've checked the book out before (in fact it was last summer) but I got bored and skip to the ending. The beginning was alright but so many characters confused me. It took all my concentration to focus on it.

That poor, poor kid...that's probably some very thick, dry reading!
