Nazi Olympics

A while back, I was learning about Nazi Germany in History Honors and I briefly learned about the Nazi Olympics. To start off with, there was a sign outside the stadium that said, "No Jews or dogs allowed." Shocking, huh? That Jews were lowered to the level of "dog" is completely intolerable to us today. Well, for the running part of the Olympics, Jesse Owens, a black man, was representing the US. Hitler was so furious that there was a black man at the Olympics that he left the stadium before the races started. Anyway, Jesse Owens gave Hitler a big slap in the face when he made first place and defeated his Nazi opponent. I thought that was pretty funny how Hitler thought all this time that blacks were worthless and then he was defeated in his own stadium by a BLACK MAN! Ironically, Jesse's Nazi opponent became a friend and it was found out that he was only involved with the Nazis to keep from being killed. The African Americans also embarassed the Nazis by defeating them in a boxing match and by having a black lady sing in Washington.

Thats a very cool story, I also heard a little about it too. (though I am not in History yet) I read somewere that the African-American runner was predijuice against the Nazi runner. After meeting the runner from Germany, he learned of his story and why he was there. I think it is really cool how when a person gets to know a person and finds out that there idea of them was totally off. It shows how looks and ethnicisity has an effect on personal thoughts.
