Death

In Jane Pittman, Jane has experiened several losses in her life. I just got all caught up on my reading and it is rather depressing. I don't know how she just doesn't break down and stop living life herself either.

First, Jane meets a man named Joe Pittman. She says that she is not married to him, but she lives with Joe and helps him take care of his two daughters. Joe is black, and he breaks horses for a living. This scares Jane to death. She started having these dreams of Joe getting thrown off of this black stallion that Joe is going to break in, and he dies. This scared Jane so much, she went to this fortune teller and got this potion stuff to prevent him from breaking and riding this horse. Well, it didn't work, because Jane also went to the corral that the stallion was being kept and the horse got loose. Joe went after the horse, and it did throw him off, ending his life right there in the woods.

Second, Ned comes back to Jane. Ned now is a professor, and teaches children reading and writing, but also preaches to them. He preaches about how they shouldn't be scared of death, and to stand up to the white men. "Wouldn't you rather die saying I'm a man than to die saying I'm a contented slave?" Ned preached one day. Jane knew that Ned was going to be killed by a white man. The Klu-Klux Klan has came to her house before, because of Ned, but no one got hurt. Jane told Ned to always watch his back, but what surprised me so much is that Ned said that he wasn't afraid to die. I am afraid to die. I am afraid of being in pain when I die, and what will happen to me once I am dead. I go to church, and I believe in God, so I know I will go to Heaven, but I am still scared. Does anyone else feel this way? Ned does die, he gets shot by a white man.

Even after the two mjor losses in Jane's life she still manages to keep moving on. I wonder what her determination is? I guess she just has a huge will to live, and not to ever give up. I am starting to enjoy this book now that I am so far into it. It is very powerful, and the writing is very good. My mom was telling me that there is a movie this book, and I decided that once I am finished I will watch it.
